Home is where the hoop is

GILROY - Last week's regular season finales weren't expected to end the seasons of either the boys' or girls' basketball teams from Gilroy High.

But the idea of both clubs taking the floor at Bob Hagen Gymnasium in Gilroy again this season wasn't so likely until Sunday's Central Coast Section playoff selection meeting was held.

Gilroy's boys (14-12) will be hosting Silver Creek (11-15) in the first round of the playoffs at 7 p.m. tonight, with Alisal (18-8) awaiting the winner in the second round.

After splitting league games with Alisal this season, Gilroy is confident it could advance to face No. 2 Bellarmine on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the lady Mustangs (16-10) received a five seed and will be hosting No. 12 Homestead (15-11) at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The winner will play at No. 4 Piedmont Hills (19-9) on Saturday.

Boys' coach Jeremy Dirks said he is hopeful his club will be able to meet the challenge.

"It's definitely a winnable game," Dirks said. "We're excited to be in Gilroy so we can gets some fans."

Dirks added that the school will be passing out T-shirts to students who attend the game.

GHS ladies' coach Susan Shapiro was also pleased with the seed her team was given and the location of the game.

"I'm looking at the wins and the losses [Homestead has] had; we should be competitive with them," Shapiro said.

Junior varsity standout Emily Costa, a freshman guard, has been pulled up for the hopeful playoff run, and should be a major contributor, Shapiro said.

"That's gonna be huge for us because she's a player that could've played varsity all year long," Shapiro said. "She could very well be the missing link."

Both coaches said home court should be a major advantage.

"We know where all the sweet spots are on the court," Shapiro said.

Girls' basketball note: Sophomores Chelsea Hill and Sovi Nou recently received invitations to play in the Phenom 150 basketball camp taking place in July, Shapiro said. The camp is by invitation only and recognizes players who excel on the court as well as in the classroom.

JV note: The Gilroy Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Team ended its season with a 41-30 win over Palma on Thursday evening. With the victory, the JV team won the Tri-County Athletic League championship with an 11-1 record. The JV's total record was 22-5.

Dylan Jensen led the Mustangs with 14 points and 9 rebounds against Palma, while Dretrich Baumgartner played a key role in the latter stages of the game with six points and six rebounds. Cameron Yawary added eight points for Gilroy.

For the season, Yawary led the team in scoring, averaging 13.4 points per game. Jensen was second in scoring with a 9.3 points per game, and led the team in rebounding with 8.5 per game. Cameron Harrell led the team in assists with 4.2 per game.
